March 21, 1975
Dear Mr. Ullman,

Thank you for your great kindness in returning the book on Rudy with your wonderful comment written below your foreword. I may say this transcends the greatest ambition I ever dreamt when I began the book in 1947. When you wrote the foreword in 1950, I could scarcely believe the reality that this had happened, so unattainable did I expect this, stamping as it did the book with absolute authority on Valentino second to none throughout the world that I would never have dared to ask you to write of my own volition.

And now you have affixed your signature upon the book again to bring it up to date and perpetuate the challenge of the truth it contains about Rudy to vanquish the lies and calumnies that others might say and write about him; as well as bring enlightenment and nostalgic pleasure to those who will never forget his noble roles upon the screen and those of the younger generations who will always find something to admire in the chivalrous example and romantic magic of the hero who thrilled their mothers and grandmothers- and many a grandfather- as the legendary and immortal Rudolph Valentino.

Such is the impact your foreword and signature has had upon me, and I am humbly and most deeply honored that my name should appear beside your name upon my book.

The present edition incidentally is almost sold out and the publisher is already printing its second impression, to meet continued orders. No fewer than 110 public libraries in Britain now have the book and at least one American book importer ordered 53 copies for his large mail-order business. The book is catalogued in the public lending and reference library in Edinburgh but is never seen on the shelves- so keen is the demand that it is always out on loan, while there is an increasing number of lenders writing to borrow it on the reserve lists.

I am sorry indeed to learn that you have been in the hospital and sincerely hope that you will be feeling strong and well again by the time you get this. Meantime, thank you for you own good wishes and please accept mine with my highest regards and gratitude for the privilege of knowing you as Rudy’s closest friend.

Yours Sincerely,
Norman A. MacKenzie
